Jesus heals a demon-possessed man. [Mark 5:15]
Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. [Matthew 18:21-22 NASB]
And below Jesus talks with Peter. I heard a sermon somewhere discussing this passage of scripture. Peter wanted to impress Jesus by saying "seven times" instead of the traditional "three times" to forgive somebody. Jesus then convicts Peter's heart to do much more - 77 times! Jesus then warns us about doing what the unforgiving servant does in Matthew 18:22-35, and the consequences.
When I read Matthew 18:22-35 I am convicted of my own sin. I am that servant described in the parable, I need to repent. Jesus shows mercy by freeing me of my debt! BUT I continually look back and see the debts of others (with the unrighteous belief that they still owe me). So what do I need to do? I get down on my knees and confess, and surrender to Jesus at the foot of the Cross!
